Sony Ericsson W800i

Sony Ericsson W800i taken with Canon Powershot S60

This is my first non-Nokia phone.

The reason I went for the W800i. was that I wanted to sync my phone with the Mac. Unfortunately, Nokia support is somewhat lacking, so I had to go with Sony Ericsson.

At first, the phone had little trouble syncing. The only trick was to allow it be used for Internet connections. It doesn't actually use it, but seemed happier if you let it think that you would. I could even move my mouse around via the phone.

Then I realised that I could not SMS. Photo messaging? Yes. Voicemail messaging? Yes. Simple text messaging? No. So I called up Orange and the lady claimed it was common on these phones. So they sent me a SIM update. Now I could text message. However, it broke all the syncing that I had previously set up.

I deleted all references to the phone. Deleted all references to the Mac on the phone. Deleted all the contacts on the phone. All proved fruitless. Only after reseting the phone and going from scratch again, could I sync again.

The camera is okay, but I would not use it for anything except adding a bit of colour to a blog entry. This photo was taken this evening, at the LRUG meeting.

I am still getting used to the keys. It's almost like a Nokia layout, but not quite. Why is the space the hash key, and not 0? Why is the key sequence to lock the phone the exact opposite of the Nokia sequence. Why is the cancel/return button on the other side?

Ah well, that's what I'm stuck with for another year.

Hm. Looks like a cigarette box. Sounds like it has cool features, though. I'm still on Nokia - I think maybe my fourth or fifth. Pretty basic, though. At least it doesn't look so much like a shoe as my first one did (see: Maxwell Smart).

Now you have the same phone as Y! You forget the most important part - it's also a Walkman phone with 512 memory stick - almost close to something that the iTunes phone should have been...

Mmm.. If I strayed from Nokia it would definitely be to Sony Ericsson, I like how customisable they are. My trusty(ish) 6230 is still ok at the moment but I should look at my upgrade options and I'm definitely moving back to Orange after a year with Vodafone that proved Orange are better. I originally chose the 6230 'cos I like Nokia's address-book and the feel of the keys a little more; also for it's memory card (MMC) and mp3 player, but the built-in player sucks. For long podcasts I have to split them before they go on the phone, if I don't it just crashes at 1hr in; I use mp3splt (command-line tool) for a handy workaround. Sometimes it will just crash the phone when playing for no reason whatsoever. Oh, and no seek, just a slow fast forward/rewind. I've not yet come across a downloadable player I could use instead. Waiting for my next gadget to have a proper player.

You will get used to the keys. I changed a few months ago to a sony ericsson after having only ever used Nokia. For the first month I wzs still using my nokia as well, but within a few weeks I couldn't remember what keys to use on that. I would spend ages trying to lock the nokia then usually give up.
