El Perro
Venue: The Phoenix
Carlos Sorin's Historias Minimas took us through Patagonia. One thread following a man searching for his dog.
El Perro brings back the theme of a man and his dog, but in a more light-hearted way. This time we follow a 52 year old (possibly illiterate) mechanic and what happens to him as he travels and has chance encounters. It is unmistakably Sorin in execution.
Coco is a man who has lived his life in windy Patagonia. but seems to have always wanted to go to Buenos Aires. He was a mechanic, but now prefers to make knife handles. Until he meets Lechien - a great big white dog.
Walter, who he meets through a succession of chance encounters, helps him train the dog for shows. A few times I wondered if Walter was just going to swindle Coco for the money and poor Coco would be left with nothing. But I'm not going to tell you what happens.
Fabulous film - go and watch it!
Favourite shot: Coco in his white overalls sitting against a red fence, and Lechien lying down standing out likewise.
