Run to the Sun 2005
I spent this 3-day weekend at Run to the Sun in Newquay - an annual rally for VW Beetles, custom cars and surfers. Eight of us were down there with Maggie, the pink drag racing bug, and her owner H.
We spent most of Saturday getting from London to Newquay, which wasn't too bad until about 20 miles to our destination. We took a slight detour down some country lanes emerging onto stunning beaches. When we finally reached our destination it was obvious that everyone was in a party mood. There were lots of different types of fun on for the evening. We started off at a club where there were fire twirlers (poi, sticks, etc.) and acrobats. Then onto a disco, before crawling in for 4am.
The Show and Shine meant some of us were up at 7am washing Maggie. We headed to the show in Newquay and parked up between a camper and a convertible bug. The guy in the bug was obviously aiming to win - he even got his girlfriend to spray his tyres to make them as shiny as the rest of the car. Undaunted, we went off in search of breakfast before the show started.
On our return, Maggie seemed to be getting some attention, but mostly from girls. I think it has something to do with the Barbie pink paint job. Once we started posing and taking photos with her, interest seemed to pick up. The show was really good fun and I burned a couple of rolls of film there.
Our last night was filled with more booze and dancing, and the obligatory end of night chips. I got quite drunk thanks to our friend in the Thundercats tee-shirt and red cowboy hat.
Cream teas. Beaches. Shiny bugs and their owners. Fire twirlers. Next time we should take the week off, and bring spare livers.
