76th Oscars

Keisha Castle-Hughes

I hope Keisha wins Best Actress, but Charlize probably will.

I will be highly amused if Johnny wins best actor, although I suspect Bill Murray will steal it.

Belleville Rendez-Vous should obviously win the animation category. Why Brother Bear was nominated is beyond me.

The Return of the King is overrated, but that's not a big surprise. It should win Best Visual Effects, but little else.

Whale Rider and Big Fish should be in for Best Picture.

You may have noticed my bias towards Whale Rider. That's because I think it was easily the best film of 2003.

I am betting the Oscars are a virtual repeat of the Golden Globes, with Lost in Translation taking many awards and Charlize Theron getting best actress. Johnny won't win best actor, his movie wasn't serious enough. I would love it if he did, but he won't. I really need to see Whale Rider.

I must see Whale Rider since you've recommended it so highly.

my brother has been talking about whalerider for months...i am sure i won't be able to get it at the video store now!!! what about finding nemo for animation? i didn't see the other two...i agree with alica that johnny won't win and i think bill will. (did you know johnny is going to play willy wonka next? can't remember where i heard that) thanks for the recap...

Johnny *is* playing the fabulous Mr. Wonka, and Tim Burton is directing. Of course the music is Danny Elfman...I can hardly wait!

Wow! I am amazed that the Academy took the time to recognize a little film like Whale Rider. I enjoyed it and Keisha was wonderful, but it isn't their usual way to recognize someone that young from such a "small" film. Bill Murray was so subtle and so good in "Lost in Translation," I hope he wins. I loved Depp, but he was over the top, which was wonderful, but much easier to do than understate. It is refreshing to see the little guy getting the nod. The Whale Rider and Lost in Translation are both "little films."

I look more for good stories in a film rather than special effects. That's why I don't rate Return of the King or Finding Nemo too highly. Both stories are fine, but don't do anything for me. I think Lord of the Rings would have worked much better if Frodo had kicked Sam off the ledge and became Melkor's new evil toadie.

If Keisha wins we might have another Anna Paquin moment, you know when she won best supporting actress for The Piano and just stood there with her jaw dropping open? But maybe it's the New Zealand thing that made me think of that.

I have only just seen Whale Rider (bad Kiwi! smack on hand!) and Keisha's performance was outstanding, especially when you consider she was picked from hundreds of school kids and had no previous acting experience. What a great night for NZ it'd be if she and Peter Jackson won.

When does monster get a release in the uk ive been watching charlize since the devils advocate and knew it would only be a short time b4 she would be recognised, scarlett johanson looks a little bit like a younger charlize and holds the screen with a similar innocence in her early work. good luck to them both
