Linux on a Sony VAIO FX705
UPDATE: Ubuntu 4.10 on a Sony VAIO FX705
I bought this laptop about a year ago. I installed SuSE 7.3 and 8.0 in it, but could never get the sound to work.
Sony have decided that it would be in their best interest to provide you with a soundcard/modem combo.
This means that the modem is software driven and causes all sorts of issues when you want to use sound at the same time as the modem. This actually occurs in Windows too!
If you really need to use a modem, then get an external one - don't bother with this hatchet job.

I'm curious as to how you managed this. I've tried installing SuSE 8.2 on this machine but neither the sound worked (reported the sound card was not running) nor the printer (couldn't find the printer port). Also the boot hung when attempting to initialise the PCMCIA card.
IIRC it just worked. I would recommend you start off with a very clean machine. Don't try to configure your PCMCIA or printer until you have your sound working. In fact don't have anything else plugged in as you're installing. One thing I would advise also is not to setup the screen or the sound as part of the install. Do that once you have an otherwise working system.
